Nude Gail O'grady, Lights Already Hot
The loft smelled like dust, cold coffee and the sharp chemical ghost of a flash that had been popping since noon. Gail came in through the steel door with her coat still half on and a paper cup in her fist, and she looked around the room like she owned the lease — slow, unhurried, taking in the seamless paper taped to the floor, the sandbags, the fan pushing hot air across the boards. She set the cup down on a crate, dragged the coat off her shoulders and dropped it. Underneath it she was already in the robe, black, thin, tied loose at the waist so it hung open at the chest and showed the pale slope of one breast every time she moved. "You want me to warm up or do you want to just start," she said. Not a question, really. I told her to start. She pulled the tie and let the robe slide.
It came off her shoulders and pooled at her heels and there she was, all of her, no slow reveal, no tease. Her skin was winter-pale and flushed pink at the throat and the elbows, and the afternoon light coming through the tall windows laid a hot band of honey down one side of her, the curve of hip, the outside of a thigh, while the other side stayed in shadow. Her tits sat heavy and low with the weight of the pose, nipples gone tight and dark in the cool air, and she stretched her arms overhead just to feel the pull in her ribs. The fan caught the hair at her nape. Nobody in the room said anything. You could hear the paper under her bare feet, that soft gritty sound, and the wet click of her tongue against her teeth.
Getting Close Enough to Hear Her Breathe
We shot the easy stuff first — standing, chin down, hand on the back of her neck — but easy doesn't last. Ten minutes in I had her backed against the seamless, one knee bent, and the light was doing that thing where it finds the crease of a stomach and the fine gold hair on her forearms and makes them look lit from inside. She was breathing through her mouth. I moved in close enough to smell her, soap and sweat and something warmer underneath, and I crouched down and put the lens about a foot from her hip. She rolled her pelvis toward me like an offering. The muscle jumped under the skin. Down between her thighs a thin shine had started up, catching the light every time she shifted her weight, and she wasn't shy about it either — she widened her stance a half inch and let me see.
"That's it," I said, and she laughed, low, and said, "That's it, huh." Then she reached down and dragged two fingers through herself, slow, unhurried, and lifted them to her mouth and sucked them clean without breaking eye contact. The shutter sounded like a machine gun. Her lips came away glossy. She put the same two fingers back down, circled herself, and her jaw went slack and her eyes drifted off the lens and somewhere over my shoulder, and the whole thing stopped being a job. Her hips worked in a slow grind against her own hand. The wet sound of it was louder than the fan. I shot until the buffer choked.
After the Last Frame, Everything Stays Off
She came with her back against the paper and one heel hooked over my sandbag, chin tucked, a long shaky breath going out of her and her thighs clamping shut on her own wrist. Then she slid down the seamless to the floor and sat there with her knees up and her chest heaving and the pale of her belly all marked red from where she'd been leaning. Sweat at her hairline. A stripe of light across her shoulder. She looked up at me, blew out the last of it, and said, "You got the shot?" I said I got the shot. She nodded, pulled the robe up over one shoulder without bothering to close it, and reached for her cold coffee like none of it had happened — but her hand was still shaking, and she had to use both of them.

How do you keep a nude shoot from feeling stiff?
Skip the slow reveal and get the clothes off early, then keep the subject moving — walking, stretching, shifting weight. Movement kills the mannequin look before it starts.
What do you actually need on set for a shoot like this?
Warm room, seamless paper, sandbags, a fan, water and cold coffee. Have a robe within arm's reach for the breaks so the model isn't standing around naked between setups.
How close should the camera get?
Close enough to hear her breathe. A foot off the hip or the shoulder reads as intimate; anything past three feet starts to feel like a catalog.
