Jill St John Nude: Silk Slips and Shutter Clicks

Editör 4 min read
Jill St John Nude

Key takeaways

  • The robe comes off at the radiator's click, not on command.
  • She calls the pace — every yes is spoken out loud.
  • The last frame is shot in near-dark, all texture and breath.

Jill St John Nude: The Room First

The loft is a fourth-floor walk-up with bad stairs and good light, and by four in the afternoon the whole west wall turns to honey. Jill St John stands in it with her coffee going cold, and she is not in a hurry. That is the first thing worth saying about this shoot: nobody here is in a hurry. She is twenty-six, tall in a way she keeps forgetting, hair pinned up off her neck because the radiator ticks like a clock and the room is warm. The robe is charcoal silk, tied loose at the waist, and it moves when she breathes. The photographer loads a 35mm prime, handheld, no tripod, and tells her the plan is nothing — no poses, no counting, just stay in the light and move how she wants. She nods, sets the cup down, and says the thing that makes the whole afternoon work: "If I stop, I'll say stop. Otherwise keep shooting."

For ten minutes it is just cloth. She walks the edge of the window, sits on the radiator's arm, drags one bare foot along the floorboards. The shutter is quiet and steady and she starts to forget it. Then she hooks a thumb under the tie and pulls, and the silk goes slack, and the robe opens down the middle like a curtain with nothing behind it but her.

Silk Slips and Shutter Clicks

The robe comes off her shoulders and drops, and the room gets very simple. Sunlight crosses her collarbone, the flat of her stomach, the tops of her thighs, and she turns into it instead of away from it, chin up, eyes half shut. The camera moves in close enough to hear the film advance and she laughs at that, a low one, and lets her arms fall open. Goosebumps run her forearms even in the heat. Her nipples tighten in the cool air off the window and she does not hide them, does not cross her arms, just stands there being looked at and liking it.

"Turn," the photographer says, and she turns. "Slower." She slows down. There is a mirror propped against the brick and she catches herself in it, and something in her posture loosens — the small vanity of seeing her own hip curve and the light sliding over it. She sits on the floor with her back to the wall, knees up and apart, and the shutter goes and goes. Then she lies back on the rug, one arm over her head, and the whole long line of her is on the floorboards in the honey light, and the camera is above her, and she says, quiet, "That's the one, isn't it," and it is.

After the Last Frame

By six the sun has climbed the wall and thinned out, and the last look is shot almost in the dark — no shapes, all texture, the grain of the rug under her palm, breath you can hear on the tape. She stays naked on the floor long after the camera is capped, one knee rocking slow, and nobody reaches for a robe. When she finally does sit up, she pulls the silk back over one shoulder and leaves the other bare, and that is how she drinks her cold coffee, half dressed, half in the light, grinning at nothing in particular.

How long should a nude shoot run?

Ninety minutes tops, three looks, two breaks. Past that the poses go stale and the eyes go glassy.

What do you actually bring?

A robe that opens easy, water, a playlist, and no phone in the room. Warm socks for the floorboards help more than you'd think.

How do you kill the nerves?

Start clothed and let the room warm up. Talk, shoot the boring frames first, and let her call the pace out loud.
